Is there an eruv in Crown Heights?
There is no eruv accepted by the Crown Heights Beis Din. The Rabbonim have ruled that the arrangement publicized for the neighborhood may not be relied upon.
May one carry in Crown Heights on Shabbos?
No. The Crown Heights Rabbonim have prohibited carrying in the neighborhood streets.
Does the ruling also apply on Yom Kippur?
Yes. The Osdoba–Segal ruling, the Beis Din guidance, and the current ruling expressly include Yom Kippur.
What does an eruv permit?
A valid eruv allows permitted objects to be carried within the area that has been halachically enclosed and communally joined. It does not permit other melachos or apply beyond its actual boundary.
What makes an eruv valid?
The status of the streets, a continuous halachic enclosure, the required communal arrangements, sechiras reshus where applicable, qualified rabbinic authority, and reliable supervision must all be addressed.
Does a weekly inspection establish that an eruv is valid?
No. Inspection can show whether an accepted route has changed. It does not decide whether the original enclosure or the status of the streets was halachically valid.
What is reshus harabim?
Reshus harabim is the Torah's public domain. Width, openness, public access, the form of the route, the city around it, and according to many authorities shishim ribo enter its definition.
What does shishim ribo mean?
Shishim ribo means six hundred thousand. The poskim differ over what passage, population, or public use must reach that number.
Is there a position that no reshus harabim exists today?
Yes. The poskim cite such a position, generally connected to the conditions required for a complete reshus harabim. It is not an automatic ruling that every modern city can be enclosed with an ordinary wire.
If establishing an eruv is a mitzvah, why is carrying prohibited in Crown Heights?
The mitzvah is to establish a halachically valid eruv. The Crown Heights Rabbonim did not accept the publicized arrangement and ruled that it is treated as nonexistent.
What did the Rebbe say about publicizing eruvin in large cities?

What about Kfar Chabad and other communities with accepted eruvin?
An accepted eruv in another community rests on that community's streets, enclosure, arrangements, and Rabbonim. It does not establish the status of Crown Heights.
What did Rav Moshe Feinstein rule concerning Manhattan and Brooklyn?

May a child or non-Jew carry?
There is no general heter to arrange ordinary carrying through a child or a non-Jew. The defined halachos for illness, serious need, age, instruction, and the type of domain require an actual case.

Pikuach nefesh and genuine safety needs follow their own halachos and do not depend on an eruv. Recurring medical or mobility needs should be discussed with a Rav in advance.
